Whether you’re familiar with the ancient stories and poems, or a total newcomer to the world of Greek mythology, Lore Olympus has something to offer. This webcomic turned graphic novel omnibus is a colourful eyegrab painted with wit in a contemporary style that marries beloved tropes with modern dynamics. Rachel Smythe expertly cleans house, airing out Olympus’ dirty laundry, while discarding much of the baggage standing in the way of the original myths from being adored in the modern age. It’s no secret that the majority of these tales had horrific depictions of unspeakable acts often romanticised or excused by people of the time. Smyth reimagines the pantheon without stripping them of their identities or personalities, transforming the story of Hades and Persephone from one of violence and terror, to a tale of two people navigating forbidden love in the fast-paced world of Olympus. The world of the Greek gods is wonderfully reworked into a city of towering skyscrapers, glamorous parties, and buzzing nightclubs where our protagonists live, work, and flirt their way through the chapters of this beautifully illustrated first volume (episodes 1-25). Don’t be fooled by the jeans and high heels, though; the story is just as dark as its source material, just more accessible, and with a responsibility to the characters who’re most affected by the trauma depicted within.
